On 2nd June 1999, coinciding with the Silver Jubilee celebration of the golden reign of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, the then Department of Telecommunications introduced Internet services in Bhutan for the first time. Also in 1999, the 77th session of the National Assembly passed the Bhutan Telecommunications Act. Following this, the Department of Telecommunications was transformed as a wholly state-owned corporation called Bhutan Telecom Limited (BT) in July 2000. Since then, BT has continuously improved its operating efficiency, reduced prices, increased service penetration and improved its quality of service thus meeting the government’s objective of corporatization.
In order to meet the growing needs of its customers, BT successfully introduced the cellular phone services for the first time in Bhutan in November 2003. The cellular mobile service was open to competition and accordingly, competitor started its service from April 2007. With heightened competition, the role of the company to build brand image and adopt some prominent advertisement strategies is felt quite important. BTL has left no stone unturned in its efforts towards fulfilling both its commercial and social mandates. Today, BTL’s revenue and customer base are growing at a sustained pace. B-Mobile has taken its services to even the remotest corners of the country where commercial viability is out of the question and its network has covered all 205 Gewogs (sub-district) in the country.
